Welcome to the online training for Preschool PTSD Treatment (PPT), a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in young children. This online course complements the detailed, session-by-session manual, Treating PTSD in Preschoolers: A Clinical Guide, by Michael Scheeringa, MD, which was published as a book by Guilford Press in 2016.
PPT is a structured, 12-session protocol of CBT for PTSD in young children. In a randomized controlled trial, it showed superiority to a wait list condition in a sample of 3-6 year-old children (Scheeringa MS, Weems CF, Cohen JA, Amaya-Jackson L, Guthrie D . Trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder in three through six year-old children: A randomized clinical trial. Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry 52, 8, 853-860. DOI: 10.1111/j.1469-7610.2010.02354.x). PPT is also developmentally appropriate for 7-12 year-old children.
The effectiveness of PPT has been recognized in the SAMHSA National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices and the California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse.
PPT is the only CBT that has been tested in a sample of young children who suffered a wide range of traumatic experiences.
What the book covers: The book describes the structured,
step-by-step instructions on how to conduct PPT.
What this online course covers: The online course provides audiovisual vignettes of real PPT psychotherapy sessions to illustrate the most key aspects. The online course does not provide step-by-step instructions of PPT techniques and is not sufficient by itself for those wishing to learn PPT. The online course enhances the material in the book by showing short pieces of actual therapy sessions.
The book and the online course together provide a better training experience than either alone.
The audiovisual vignettes of real PPT therapy sessions
are shown with animated characters. The
animated videos are duplicates of actual therapy sessions that were
videotaped. The words spoken by the characters are real exchanges from real
patients and therapists. Some details were
changed and their images are not shown in order to protect their privacy.
